Title: [Biblia latina].
Origin: [Paris, France: c. 1250].
Description: Illuminated manuscript on parchment. 613 leaves. 18 x 11 cm. Double columns of 42 lines. Textblock: 12.5 x 8.5 cm.
Binding: Bound in red goatskin by Carolyn Horton, c. 1963. The previous binding (19th-century French red velvet over boards) has been preserved.
Comments: A "Paris" recension of the Latin vulgate, written in tiny gothic script in black and red ink; headings and initials are in red and blue. Each book and prologue begins with an historiated initial in red, blue, green, purple, and gold following the established iconography of the Paris tradition. An 18th-century paper flyleaf includes a Latin description of the manuscript, citing the biblical research of Augustin Calmet (1672-1757). An early vellum leaf tabulating the number of chapters in each book was added at the end. The interpretation of Hebrew names is the "Aaron mons fortis" version. An illuminated initial "B", cut from a 15th-century Missal, is affixed to the third modern front flyleaf.
Decoration: Eighty illuminations introduce the books of the Bible. View List
