Saving a Dallas landmark

Sam Ratcliffe

Sam Ratcliffe ’74, head of the Jerry Bywaters Special Collections, Hamon Arts Library, spoke to the Dallas City Council on September 8 during the Dallas Landmark Commission hearing. Before a crowd of more than 250 people in the city council chamber, Ratcliffe talked about the historical and cultural significance of murals painted by Perry Nichols, a Dallas native whose artwork once graced public buildings throughout the city, including the Lakewood Theater in East Dallas. Thanks to the testimony of Ratcliffe and other experts, the commission voted unanimously to start the landmark designation process for the iconic theater, built in 1938. The story was covered by local affiliates of the four major networks as well as The Dallas Morning News.
