He began his teaching career at East Texas State University teaching business statistics, business law, and introduction to business. He then was employed at Port Neches-Groves High School serving as a teacher of world history, civics, and then a counselor. Dana then moved to Lamar University as assistant dean of admissions and records, and then director of school relations. He was at Lamar for 21 years.
Dana moved to Kilgore College as director of counseling, school relations, placement, and testing in 1986; followed by Texas A&M Commerce in 1998 as coordinator of special admissions and recruiting projects. Dana served as president of TACRAO from 1993-1994, presiding over the 73rd Annual Meeting at South Padre Island.
TACRAO President (2019-20) Bobby Lothringer wrote "Dana was one of the most admired leaders of our profession, unofficially serving as a mentor to many new and experienced recruiters traversing the Texas highways and byways from one recruitment fair to the next. He welcomed every new recruiter he would meet to the profession and supported all of the veteran recruiters with that infectious, beaming smile and, to quote TACRAO past president Trey Hattaway, that 'I am so glad to see you' personality."
