Did You Know?
RISK MANAGEMENT coordinates SMU's Homeland Security planning, training/exercises, and evaluations. Employees are involved in this effort through building site exercises that test our ability to evacuate, shelter-in-place, and lock down a building, during an emergency.
Property and Casualty Claims Management
ORM provides administrative guidance on everything from Property and Casualty Claims Management to the administrative review of risk management issues relating to contracts, agreements, leases, event planning, and travel.
Environmental Health and Safety
Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) recognizes that the students and employees of SMU are the University's greatest asset. That's why the safety of the students and employees is our greatest concern.
EH&S offers a variety of programs and services to ensure that we all have a safe place to learn, live and work. The EH&S staff is responsible for maintaining a safe and healthful environment that is free from recognized hazards. We partner directly with the University community to prevent accidents, eliminate unsafe conditions, protect the environment, provide training on safety techniques and applicable regulations, and much more.

and Business Continuity
SMU has an Emergency Management Plan to address how various disasters and catastrophic events that could affect the campus will be managed. The plan establishes policies, procedures, and an organizational structure to guide campus operations.
The Business Continuity Planning process at SMU is performed to ensure the University is able to continue all of its academic and business functions - regardless of whether a natural, man-made, or technological disaster causes service interruptions. Within the program area in which you will be working, there is a team that supports you to ensure that SMU can continue to deliver our academic and business services, even under adverse conditions.
Fire Training Exercise - 2006
SMU has a comprehensive Fire Safety program responsible for the administration of fire prevention and life safety code inspections. Services also include oversight of the maintenance, installation and testing of all new and existing fire systems on campus to ensure they are operating properly.
Fire Safety staff train SMU students and employees in fire prevention and safety techniques such as evacuation, shelter-in-place, and the proper use of fire extinguishers.
The Office of Risk Management's Workers' Compensation team is ready to help with your work-related injury and claims process. There are just a few easy steps to follow and details are available on the risk management website. What is most important for employees to remember if they are injured on the job is that they are required to report their on-the-job injuries within 48 business hours, and where medical attention is necessary, employees must see a network approved Workers' Compensation doctor in order for their claim to be accepted and paid.
