Medical Leave and Long Term Disability
SMU offers comprehensive paid time-off benefits that include paid medical leave and income continuation through the Long Term Disability Plan.

1. Medical Leave
Medical Leave begins to accrue on your first day of employment. Full-time, regular staff members accrue Medical Leave at a rate of one day per month, and part-time and partial employees accrue Medical Leave according to scheduled hours. You can accumulate up to 90 days of Medical Leave.
You may use paid Medical leave as soon as it is accrued.
You can use Medical Leave for the following:
- Illness or injury to yourself, spouse, dependent children, or parents.
- Wellness visits for self, spouse, dependent children, or parents.
- Occupational injury.
- Death in immediate family.
2. Long Term Disability
All full-time staff and faculty are covered after three months of employment. SMU pays the full cost of Long Term Disability benefits, which are administered by The Standard.
If you become totally and permanently disabled, you will receive monthly income equal to 60% of your salary, up to a maximum of $7,500 per month. Your Long Term Disability benefit will be offset by Social Security disability benefits and other disability income you may be eligible to receive (such as Workers’ Compensation).
