The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986 (COBRA) applies to individuals enrolled in SMU’s Medical and/or Dental plans who leave the University or have an enrolled child who no longer qualifies as a dependent.
If you leave SMU you are allowed to extend your Medical and Dental coverage for 18 months or until you become eligible for coverage by another group plan; whichever occurs first.
Medical and/or Dental coverage may be extended up to 36 months for dependents who lose coverage due to marriage, divorce, graduation, or death. The participant is required to pay premiums in order to continue coverage under COBRA.
