The editor of the Gray diary was Paul D. Lack, presently vice president and academic dean of Villa Julie College, Stevenson, Maryland.

Earlier, "Dr. Lack served as vice president for academic affairs at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas.  He held other positions at the Texas institution including chair of the department of history, interim vice president of student services and vice president, research and planning.

Dr. Lack earned his undergraduate degree from McMurry in 1966.  He was teaching history at McMurry while earning his doctorate, which he completed at Texas Tech University in 1973.  McMurry named Dr. Lack an outstanding faculty member in 1987 and in 1992 he was named outstanding administrator.

A noted scholar, Dr. Lack is the author of numerous books and articles including The Texas Revolutionary Experience, which earned him two awards from the Texas State Historical Association.  He was named a distinguished alumnus at McMurry University and received an outstanding alumnus award from Texas Tech."   [Appointment press release, Villa Julie College, June 27, 2002.]
