July 16, 1953 letter from President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890–
1969) to Bishop William C. Martin stating that the freedom of
America’s religious institutions “is one of our fundamental strengths.”
Martin (1893
1984) was the bishop of the Dallas-Fort Worth
Episcopal Area of the Methodist Church from 1948 until 1964. He
served as President of the National Council of Churches of Christ in
America from 1952 to 1954.
