October 31, 1906 letter from President Theodore Roosevelt to Bishop
Earl Cranston complimenting the bishop on his good citizenship and
knowledge of Asian affairs.
Earl Cranston (1840–1932) was a Civil War veteran who entered the
ministry in 1867 and was elected bishop in 1896. From 1898 to 1900
his episcopal duties included supervision of Methodist work in China,
Japan, and Korea.
